External Oak Staircase for Garages & Loft Areas

An external oak staircase is an efficient way to access a loft, storage area or upper floor above a garage or outbuilding without using valuable internal floor space. It can leave the garage clear for cars, machinery, tools or storage, while providing direct access to a loft, workshop, studio or office.

Internal stairs can take up a surprising amount of space. An external oak staircase keeps the staircase outside the building and can be positioned to suit the available garden or driveway area. A well-designed staircase can also connect directly to a raised landing or small balcony, creating useful outdoor space as well as access.

Structural Oak Construction

Our external staircases use substantial oak components, with the structure supported on oak newel posts and suitable metal post bases to keep the timber clear of standing water.

Stair Width & Landing Size

For a practical outdoor staircase, we generally prefer a minimum string-to-string width of around 860 mm. The landing needs to work with the loft or garage door arrangement. Around 900 × 900 mm may provide basic access, while approximately 1600 × 1600 mm creates a much more useful landing for seating or a balcony-style space.
