English Oak Exterior Staircase

A quality exterior oak staircase depends on timber size, joint design and correct staircase geometry. We use substantial oak sections and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery to create a solid, durable external staircase.

Why Use Thicker Oak?

Larger timber sections provide more material around the joints. This is especially important with mortise-and-tenon connections and oak pegs, where sufficient edge distance helps reduce splitting around the joint. Deeper strings and wider treads also give the staircase a more substantial feel and allow the joinery to remain strong as the oak naturally responds to changes in moisture.

Staircase Geometry

Each bespoke oak staircase is designed around the required rise, going, pitch, balustrade and finished floor levels. Typical spindle spacing is kept to a maximum 100 mm gap, with the final arrangement determined by the staircase design and applicable requirements. For larger structures, structural engineering can be used to check the beams, connections and foundations.
