How to Install Cedar Shingles

Step 1 – Before installing shingles, you must protect the timber roof. How to install:

Start at the eaves
Roll out the membrane horizontally ( Membrane is not necessary )
Overlap each row slightly
Staple firmly into place

Step 2 – Fit Battens and Check Coverage

When installed, each shingle shows 125 mm of its height. Therefore, battens must be spaced 125 mm centre-to-centre across the roof. This spacing ensures proper overlap, weather protection, and a clean appearance.

Step 3 – Create a Double Starter Course (Important)

At the eaves, the first row must be double-layered. This is one of the most important steps in cedar roofing.

Why a double eaves row is required

It stops water blowing under the first layer
It creates the correct thickness for smooth rows above
It strengthens the most exposed part of the roof
It ensures correct 135 mm exposure for the first visible row

How to install the double starter course:

Install the starter layer flush with the eaves
Install the first full row directly above it
Offset the joints so gaps do not align
Nail only the top third of each shingle

Step 4 – Nail the Cedar Shingles

Once the double starter course is complete, continue upwards. A chalk line helps keep each row perfectly straight.

Use two nails per shingle
Leave 5 mm gaps between shingles for natural expansion
Trim shingles at the edges if necessary
Use stainless steel or copper nails (galvanised nail corrosion is common)

Step 5 – Install the Next Rows

The next row must overlap the one below correctly. Continue this pattern until you reach the ridge.

Install with a 50:50 overlap
The centre of each shingle should sit over the gap below
Use a 125 mm spacer for consistent exposure

Step 6 – Finish an Apex Roof

Once both sides of the roof are covered, install a ridge cap. A double ridge layer gives even better long-term protection. You can use:

Pre-made cedar ridge shingles
Cut shingles layered to form a strong apex ridge

I decided to get an small patch of land behind my garage a makeover. It was just a potato patch that had seen better days. What I wanted to achieve was an outdoor kitchen and with that a sturdy oak framed cover. After many weeks of searching I came across Timber Solutions and discussed my project with Val. I must say my first impressions were that of professionalism and detail. We went through a couple of designs and finally settled on one. Well the structure is up and it looks fantastic. My guys, who built the frame, said that this is a very good structure and it was relatively simple to put up. For me it is the realisation of a goal that was 18 months in the making and boy, am I a very Happy Chappy. Many thanks Val. I will upload pictures later when the kitchen is fully completed.

I only generally review if something is very good or very bad. Fortunately this is in the former category.
When I set out to replace the external oak stairs to my garage / annex, there is always a little anxiety dealing with a company that is a fair distance away. Will they do the job, will my money be safe etc. Well I need not have worried as Val at Timbersolution did a fantastic job, and at a competitive price. He was prompt with my initial enquiry, and had plans drawn up within a few days. Throughout the process he was always available to discuss any issues, and the staircase was ready as arranged.
My builders, who assembled the staircase, were impressed by the quality of the construction, and I am delighted with the end result.

I wanted a good quality, chunky, solid oak pergola and did a lot of research before deciding to go with Val and Timber Solutions. The price point was very competitive and the communication from Val was great from start to finish. It was customisable to the overall size and dimensions of posts I wanted. It was manufactured and delivered to the time frame advised on placing the order. The added details or the champers really made it extra special. My fitter also complimented the ease of errection and the system used.
All in all, a great product and would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a special focal point pergola in their garden.

There are many companies offering oak structures, so making the tight choice is daunting.

The oak pergola is a beautiful addition to our garden. We are absolutely delighted with the outcome and feel it is great value compared to other suppliers.

Highly recommended. My pergola design was not the most traditional as it was a difficult trapezoid shape with all sorts of lengths and angles. Not a problem for Val! His design, consultation and service was second to none. The product quality is superb. The build, tho tricky in parts, was easy to follow and as a result, we have a perfect construction. Really cannot fault in anyway the service from Timber solution. Val from the start was great to deal with. Any changes I needed no problem. Delivery time exactly when he said it would be. Any questions answered quickly. Putting it together just looked at the design and matched the numbers stapled to all the parts. With the aid of two lift genies I put it up on my own. Val produced a King Post Truss in oak for us from my design in sketchup and as verified by our structural engineers calculations. We made a number of minor adjustments to the design along the way, all of which Val accommodated and confirmed with revised drawings for confirmation. I do like dealing with a small company like Val's where the person you speak to is the person doing the job and he knows what he's talking about. We elected to collect the truss disassembled in/on our van for ease of transportation (oak is heavy!) and re-assemble on site. The components all fitted perfectly (but do drill the male part of the mortice and tenon joints from both sides to avoid the drill wandering off line) I hired a genie SLA15 locally to lift it into place. All in all the process went smoothly with Val available, even on his days off, to give advice and assistance. I was swayed by the good reviews I read before selecting timber solutions and they were not wrong. Thankyou Val - you did a good job for us and I would definitely use your company again.
