How Long Does Bamboo Last?

Bamboo is a natural, durable material that works well outdoors when properly maintained. Depending on the application and conditions, bamboo can last 10–20 years or longer. This makes it a practical choice for garden screening, fencing and pergola roof features.

What Affects Bamboo’s Lifespan?

Sun, rain, humidity and temperature changes all affect how bamboo weathers. Good installation and regular maintenance can help it stay attractive and perform well for many years.

Does Bamboo Need Treatment?

Bamboo can survive outdoors without treatment. However, a suitable bamboo oil or sealant with UV protection can help maintain its appearance and protect the surface. For customers who want their bamboo to retain its original colour, regular UV-protective treatment is recommended.

UV protection helps:

Reduce colour fading
Slow natural greying
Improve weather resistance
Reduce the risk of surface mould

Natural Colour Changes

Untreated bamboo gradually develops a silvery-grey colour as it weathers. This is a natural process and does not mean the bamboo needs replacing. Some customers prefer this weathered appearance, while others choose treatment to keep the bamboo looking fresher for longer.

Black Mould and Moisture

Bamboo can develop black mould, particularly in damp or poorly ventilated areas. Regular cleaning and good airflow can help reduce this risk. Where possible, avoid trapping moisture around the bamboo or allowing it to remain in direct contact with the ground.

Splits and Cracks

Whole-round bamboo poles can develop small splits or cracks as they respond to changes in temperature and humidity. This can happen with or without treatment and is a natural characteristic of the material.

How to Keep Bamboo Looking Good

A few simple steps can help extend its life and maintain its appearance:

Clean the surface regularly
Apply UV-protective treatment when required
Provide good ventilation
Keep bamboo away from direct ground contact where possible
Check the bamboo periodically

Great company to buy from. Delivery was as stated and design drawings were sent for approval prior to manufacturing. Communication was excellent at all times. Assembly went with only minor hiccup which was our mistake. Certainly a 3 man job minimum for the main frame as the oak beams are very heavy. Would highly recommend this company

We are so happy with our oak Barn/Gazebo. Val helped me in the planning and was patient with me as I made a number of changes to the plans. Everything went smoothly with the delivery. There was a lot of heavy lifting but the whole construction build was undertaken by myself with the help of my son (and a gypsy lift for the beam!). I added a few extras for the roof - tongue and groove above the rafters, and also purchased oak facia boards and also designed some oak/rope lights which fit well with the design, this added to the overall cost but was worth it.

Process couldn’t have been easier. Val always responded quickly and laid out all the options available at the beginning before I placed the order. Kit arrived ahead of schedule and was packed very well with every item marked. Instructions for assembly were very detailed and it went together easily. The lads I got to build it said it was the best kit they’d assembled and wanted to get other customers of their landscaping business to use Timber Solutions going forward. Pavillion review I do not usually review items i have bought but this purchase was so exceptional i felt compelled to do so. My pavillion was bespoke, made to the overall sizes and layout plan I submitted to Timber Solution. The company was very tolerant and patient despite my many tweaks and alterations. They produced a very detailed set of drawings showing every component and outlining how the structure fitted together. When the pavillion was delivered, on time, it was truly a piece of high class engineering. You would expect on a one-off design of this size there would be one or two elements that need final adjustments and alterations. There were no adjustments needed at all. Every piece was clearly labelled and fitted together perfectly. It was straightforward to assemble and two people with a reasonable amount of DIY skill could carry out the task without expensive equipment The finished product looks amazing and i would have no hesitation in recommending this company

I decided to get an small patch of land behind my garage a makeover. It was just a potato patch that had seen better days. What I wanted to achieve was an outdoor kitchen and with that a sturdy oak framed cover. After many weeks of searching I came across Timber Solutions and discussed my project with Val. I must say my first impressions were that of professionalism and detail. We went through a couple of designs and finally settled on one. Well the structure is up and it looks fantastic. My guys, who built the frame, said that this is a very good structure and it was relatively simple to put up. For me it is the realisation of a goal that was 18 months in the making and boy, am I a very Happy Chappy. Many thanks Val. I will upload pictures later when the kitchen is fully completed.

I only generally review if something is very good or very bad. Fortunately this is in the former category. When I set out to replace the external oak stairs to my garage / annex, there is always a little anxiety dealing with a company that is a fair distance away. Will they do the job, will my money be safe etc. Well I need not have worried as Val at Timbersolution did a fantastic job, and at a competitive price. He was prompt with my initial enquiry, and had plans drawn up within a few days. Throughout the process he was always available to discuss any issues, and the staircase was ready as arranged. My builders, who assembled the staircase, were impressed by the quality of the construction, and I am delighted with the end result.

I wanted a good quality, chunky, solid oak pergola and did a lot of research before deciding to go with Val and Timber Solutions. The price point was very competitive and the communication from Val was great from start to finish. It was customisable to the overall size and dimensions of posts I wanted. There are many companies offering oak structures, so making the tight choice is daunting. The oak pergola is a beautiful addition to our garden. Highly recommended. My pergola design was not the most traditional as it was a difficult trapezoid shape with all sorts of lengths and angles. Not a problem for Val!
