Bamboo is a versatile natural material used for everything from garden screening and fencing to furniture and building products. Its rapid growth, distinctive appearance and renewable nature make it an interesting alternative to traditional materials.

At Timber Solution, we are exploring bamboo alongside our bespoke oak pergolas, particularly for screening, shade and decorative features.

What Is Bamboo?

Bamboo belongs to the grass family, rather than the timber family. Its hollow stems and distinctive joints give it a unique natural appearance. There are more than 1,500 species of bamboo, ranging from small garden varieties to large species that can reach impressive heights.

Why Is Bamboo Sustainable?

Bamboo can grow extremely quickly, with some species reaching growth rates of around one metre per day under suitable conditions. Many species regenerate from their existing root systems after harvesting. This allows new stems to grow without removing the entire plant. Bamboo can also produce a significant amount of usable material from a relatively small growing area, making it an efficient renewable resource when responsibly cultivated and harvested. Its natural texture creates a lighter appearance than traditional timber while still providing useful shade and screening.
