Does air-dried oak last longer than green oak?
Not necessarily. Both air-dried and green oak pergolas can last for decades with proper design and care. The difference lies in stability—air-dried oak moves less, but green oak is equally durable once seasoned naturally outdoors.
Why is air-dried oak more expensive than green oak?
Air-dried oak costs more because properly drying large beams takes years—about one year per 25 mm of thickness, plus extra time. This lengthy process, limited availability, and higher wastage make it significantly more expensive than green oak.
Does green oak crack too much for pergolas?
Cracking and surface shakes are normal in green oak as it seasons. These do not affect structural strength and are expected in traditional oak framing. Joints are designed to tighten as the oak dries, keeping the structure stable.
Can I request an air-dried oak pergola?
Yes, but it’s rarely necessary. At Timber Solution, we recommend green oak for pergolas due to its strength, affordability, and availability. We only use air-dried oak in glazing systems, where stability is essential.
Is green oak better than air-dried oak for outdoor use?
Yes. For outdoor pergolas, green oak is usually the better choice. It is easier to source in large sections, more cost-effective, and designed to naturally season in place, tightening joints over time.
| Green Oak | Air-Dried Oak |
|---|---|
| Warmer, lighter colour; more golden or honey-toned before weathering. | Darker, more muted or slightly greyed tone (especially in older beams or exposed surfaces). |
| Smoother, fewer splits initially; more visible moisture in the grain; often fewer “checks” or shakes. | More checks and surface cracks visible as the timber has had time to dry; weathering or variation more pronounced. |
| Moist, may still change shape or shrink; surface movement over time. | More stable, with much of the shrinkage already complete, though some residual stresses can remain. |
