The right post base depends on the terrace finish, foundation, and required post height. For our structures, we commonly use Simpson Strong-Tie CPT 66Z and APB 100 adjustable post bases. However, each option suits different installation conditions.
The CPT 66Z works well with porcelain and paved terraces. Ideally, we position the base below the finished paving level. As a result, the paving can sit neatly around the timber post. This approach also keeps most of the metalwork hidden and creates a clean finish. Furthermore, the CPT 66Z provides a simple and secure connection to the concrete foundation. Therefore, it works particularly well when the finished terrace level is already established.
The APB 100 offers greater flexibility because you can adjust its height. For this reason, it works especially well with timber decking. In a decking installation, you can position the base below the finished deck level. The decking can then conceal most of the metalwork, creating a neat appearance. Alternatively, you can use the APB 100 with porcelain or paving when you need additional height adjustment. In some designs, the adjustable base can also remain visible above the finished surface.
However, the post base should always connect to a suitable concrete foundation. Porcelain, paving, and decking should not carry the structural load. Therefore, we recommend choosing the post base based on the foundation, finished surface level, post height, and final appearance you want to achieve.
