Traditional tie beam trusses place the tie beam at the base of the truss, creating strong horizontal support that prevents roof spread under load. This configuration is ideal for longer spans, often up to 7 meters or more, as the lower tie beam helps resist the outward forces generated by the roof. Traditional tie beams are a great choice for larger structures, offering straightforward stability and strength without needing extra bracing or larger beams.
Raised tie trusses, in contrast, elevate the tie beam, increasing ceiling height and giving a more open feel. This style works best for shorter spans, generally under 5 meters. For larger spans, additional bracing or thicker beams are necessary, which can increase costs. The higher placement of the tie beam still prevents roof spread but requires careful engineering to distribute forces effectively to the principal rafters. For extended spans, a minimum of 100 mm of wall support or a steel I-beam over windows helps maintain structural integrity.
Both styles add a unique aesthetic and practical value, with traditional tie beams excelling in large spaces, and raised tie trusses bringing added headroom and elegance to smaller structures.
